`` Cask Of Amontillado `` By Edgar Allen Poe - 1505 Words
Edgar Allen Poe was a writer who sculpted every detail to create his desired ââ¬Å"themeâ⬠. His short stories are mostly representing the murder of a character. The murderer, who is the narrator, explains the plan for the murder. The narrator destroys the humans around him through his destructive mind. The reason for the murder is revenge and hatred. In ââ¬Å"Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heartâ⬠Poe utilized ââ¬Å"unreliable narrators,â⬠he even created similarities between murder and victim to establish the theme of self- destruction. In ââ¬Å"Cask of Amontillado,â⬠Montresor destroys himself with repression. In ââ¬Å"The tell-tale heartâ⬠the narrator battles with his subconscious mind. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, them, am I mad?â⬠(Schilb 1245). The narrator is constantly concerned about proving his sanity but this only strengthens the evidence of his insanity. The acuteness of his senses is something that he is utilizing to defend his sanity. However, his sense of sight leads to his hatred towards the old man ââ¬Å"pale blue eyeâ⬠, which is madness. His sense of hearing is something that develops as clear evidence of his insanity. ââ¬Å"The ever-louder heartbeats heard by the criminal, are they, as he says, the sound of the beating of old manââ¬â¢s heart, that old man whose corpse has been dismembered and concealed under the planking in the room? Certainly not-on the plane of realistic and objective fact. It is the â⠬Å"hideous heartâ⬠of the criminal himself which he hearsâ⬠(Quinn 10). The narrator is indeed insane for he does not even recognize his own heartbeat. Poeââ¬Ës audience has to analyze his characters; not just follow the narratorââ¬â¢s thought; ââ¬Å"he [Poe] does not require or desire complete surrender to the experience of

MOTHER TERESA In my English assignment, I was asked to do a report on someone or things that I am interested with. So, I decided to choose Mother Teresa as my role model to accomplish my task. To me, a role model is someone you want to emulate or hope to be like one day. Therefore, I choose Mother Teresa as my role model because she had many great qualities that made her an inspiration in my life. Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on the 26th August 1910 in Skopje. It is the current capital of Republic of Macedonia which was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time of her birth. She was baptized on 27th of August 1910 and receives her First Holy Communion at the age of five and a half. She was the youngest among her three siblings, they were Aga, her older sister; and Laza her brother. Her parents were Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu. Their families were a completely religious Roman Catholics. Her father was a well-respected local businessman and her mother was a housewife. Nevertheless, her father was active in politics as part of the Skopje council members and owned few houses. Not long after, her father died and it was being believed that he died because he was poisoned by his political enemies. Under those circumstances, her familyââ¬â¢s lifestyle changed completely and her mother had to work to raise the family. Agnes learned about being a charitable person from her parents. They did not neglect those who were in need in terms of financial or materials needs. Then, her religious faith was further strengthened when she actively involved herself with the activities that were conducted by the Church of Sacred Heart (Kurdasy 2009). At the age of twelve years old, she decided to become a nun. As time went by, and turned eighteen, she made a decision to leave her home in September 1928 to live with the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary which was known as the Sisters of Loreto at Ireland because of her desire to become a missionary. Agnes is a person that was willing to learn and was brave in accepting a new environment. In Ireland, she had to speak English, so she learned it and after a month, she brought the language back to India and established an education centre, St. Maryââ¬â¢s high school in Calcutta for seventeen years as a teacher and principal. Not long after that, she accepted her vows as Sister Mary Teresa as she took the name of the patron saint of the missionaries, St. Therese of Lisieux. Sister Mary Teresa made her Final Profession of Vows on 24th May 1937 and after she said she was the ââ¬Å"spouse of Jesusâ⬠for ââ¬Å"all eternityâ⬠, she was called as Mother Teresa (Langford 2008) Mother Teresa announced her mission to help the poorest of the poor while living with them as she discovered her calling from Jesus when she was on her way to an annual retreat on 10th September 1946. It all happened when she was on the train. She believed that if she did not obey what God had told her, it meant that she had to break the faith. She was given the permission to leave the Loreto Order of Nuns after a year but she did not leave until 16th August 1948. People were able to identify with her simple clothing that she wore every day; that is a simple cotton sari with blue borders. She went to cities wearing that outfit. It is a hard decision full of sacrifices that she made, for she had to leave her friends and companions just to do Godââ¬â¢s will all by herself with the strength and guidance from God. But she did not realize that the organization of Loreto Order of Nuns would adopt her outfit has their habit (Mandela 2013). The most interesting part about Mother Teresa is that before she started her mission, she learned a lot of medical skills from the Medical Missionary Sisters. After three months, she was set out to help the poor in Calcutta because of her caring heart towards others. When she reached Calcutta, she communicated with Father Van Exem to assist her in finding a place to stay. Mother Teresa stayed at St. Josephââ¬â¢s home. She received a warm welcomed from the Little Sisters of the Poor and they approached her to follow them to help the elderly at the beginning of her mission after she left Loreto Orders of Nuns (2009). Not only that, she started her mission without any financial aids. Mother Teresa did not have any money but gave her attention and energy to the poor. Even though it was tiring, she did not stop because of her love and compassion towards God and people. She helped those people that no one dared to get close to such as the lepers and the dying. Every night she would want to get back to her easy life at Loreto but then she prayed to God to help er to go through it all. Mother Teresa never stopped praying to God to ask for assistance and wisdom as she knew that without Godââ¬â¢s help, she cannot endured the suffering of helping the poor (Mandela 2013). Besides that, Mother Teresa helped incalculable poor and homeless people. She always thought to herself that there were many in need. Sh e cared about her health and she was so devoted to help and care for those who are in need as she sees Jesus in every person. As it was stated in The Good News Bible of Genesis 1:26-27, ââ¬Å"for we were created by God through his own imageâ⬠(p2). She was called to establish ââ¬Ëhelpââ¬â¢ to reach out to the poor. Through her duty of helping others, she received high financial aids from a wealthy people such as the Kennedy family and even from the Pope Paul VI by using the money of the church to help her in conducting her mission. Not only that, she also receive a lot of awards such as Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation Award, Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion; Presidential Medal of Freedom and Noble Peace Prize (2009). Mother Teresa did not care what other people will think or say. She was criticized by a lot of people for wasting all the money for the dead and the dying. But it never stops her as she loved towards the poor, the dying and the victims of leprosy. Mother Teresa was motivated to seek medical treatment for all of them. However, in order to provide it for them, the nuns of her organization set up clinics so that people are able to receive medical care and treatment. Soon after that, the sisters opened up a rehabilitation clinic for lepers. They established of over forty acres of land at Town of Peace meant for the lepers (2009). Through her compassionate heart, it actually taught me to be more compassion with others when I receive any rejection or criticism from other people. In conclusion, Mother Teresa was a person that was admired; loved and respected by the world. Her entire life was she dedicated it to God to use her to serve the poorest of the poor as a sign Jesusââ¬â¢s love through her actions, deeds and words. She was a type of person that made a great impact in my life and made people look at the world differently. The world is filled with good people, people that donate billions of dollars, those who dares to raise their voice or opinion to make changes, but then; Mother Teresa stands out in the crowd with bravery as she was a very unique person with the help of God. Mother Teresa said this, ââ¬Å"let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble workâ⬠(Teresa). To sum up, Mother Teresa taught me to have a pure heart and love others just as I love myself. Her Childhood Mother Teresaââ¬â¢s story begins in the small town of Skopje in Albania, Eastern Europe. She was born in Skopje on 27th August 1910 to a shopkeeper, Nikolle Bojaxhiu and his wife Drana. She was given the names Agnes Gonxha. The family always called her Gonxha, which means flower bud, because she was always plump and pink and cheerful. She was the youngest of three children, with a brother Lazar and sister Aga. They lived in a large house with a big garden. The Bojaxhiu family had a long tradition of success in crafts, fabric-dyeing and trade. Gonxhe was baptized in the Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and successfully completed elementary and high school years in church schools, where she was an active member of the drama section, the literary section, and the church chorus. Her parents were very caring and never turned away anyone who needed help. When Mother Teresa recalled her childhood she said ââ¬ËWe were a united and very happy family.ââ¬â¢ Her greatest joy as a child came during church masses where she could sing, read and pray. Agnes attended mass every day, prayed and said the rosary every night. When Agnes was eight years old her father died. Her mother worked very hard to make sure the children were happy and Mother Teresa remembered her childhood as being ââ¬Ëexceptionally happy.ââ¬â¢ Agnesââ¬â¢ mother continued to help others in need, seemingly unaware of her own condition. She would take care of alcoholic women in their neighborhood and helped another widow with six children raise her family. When that widow died, those six children became a part of the Bojaxhiu family. By looking back on Mother Teresaââ¬â¢s childhood now we cannot help but understand the effects of her motherââ¬â¢s values, charity and devotion. She grew up surrounded by faith and compassion and at age twelve received her first ââ¬Å"calling from Godâ⬠to help the poor. Upon hearing of this experience, her mother gave Agnes this advice, ââ¬Å"Put your hands in His hands and walk all the way with Him.â⬠à So at 12, she joined an Abbey, and at 18 she became a member of the Loreto Order of nuns. She trained in Dublin, where the motherhouse of the Loreto Sisters was. She chose the name of Sister Teresa, in memory of Saint Thà ©rà ¨se of Lisieux. In December 1928 she began her journey to India and continued to Darjeeling, at the base of the Himalayan Mountains, where she would continue her training towards her religious vows. Soon after, on January 6, 1929 she arrived in Calcutta, the capital of Bengal, India to teach at a school for girls. In Calcutta, she worked as a school aid, teacher and principal for a middle-class high school for Bengali girls. During these years she could not help but be touched by the poverty and misery in the streets and slums around her. She started actively going to hospitals and slums where she became more and more dissatisfied with the state of the people around her and the efforts to help them. On September 10, 1946, on the long train ride to Darjeeling where she was to go on a retreat and to recover from suspected tuberculosis, something happened. She had a life-changing encounter with the Living Presence of the Will of God. Mother Teresa recalls: ââ¬Å"I realized that I had the call to take care of the sick and the dying, the hungry, the naked, the homeless ââ¬â to be Godââ¬â¢s Love in action to the poorest of the poor. She asked permission to leave the Loreto congregation and to establish a new order of sisters. While the church recommended she join the Daughters of Saint Anna, who worked with the poor, Sister Teresa felt this was not nearly adequate to the calling she had received. She didnââ¬â¢t want to help the poor and retreat to a convent at night, but instead become one of the poor herself. She received that permission from Pope Pius XII. In 1948, at the age of 38, she exchanged her sisterââ¬â¢s robe for the uniform of Calcuttaââ¬â¢s poor and adopted a diet of rice and salt. The impoverished people of Calcutta were stunned by her presence among them. They could not understand why this European woman who spoke their language fluently would wash their babies, clean their wounds and educate their young. It was here in the streets of Calcutta where she was approached by one of her former students who made the remarkable request to join her. Mother Teresa was hesitant to invite someone else to take part in her calling because she wanted to make sure they understood the poverty that they would have to live in. She wrote in her diary at this time that, ââ¬Å"If the rich people can have the full service and devotion of so many nuns and priests, surely the poorest of the poor and the lowest of the low can have the love and devotion of a fewââ¬âThe Slum Sister they call me, and I am glad to be just that for His love and glory.â⬠In 1952 Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity began the work for which they have been noted ever since. Her order received permission from Calcutta officials to use a portion of the abandoned temple to Kali, the Hindu goddess of transition and destroyer of demons. Mother Teresa founded here the Kalighat Home for the Dying, which she named ââ¬Å"Nirmal Hridayâ⬠(meaning ââ¬Å"Pure Heartâ⬠). She and her fellow nuns gathered dying Indians off the streets of Calcutta and brought them to this home to care for them during the days before they died. Mother Teresaââ¬â¢s first orphanage was started in 1953, while in 1957 she and her Missionaries of Charity began working with lepers. In the years following, her homes (she called them ââ¬Å"tabernaclesâ⬠) have been established in hundreds of locations in the world. The world came to know Mother Teresa after a 1969 BBC documentary on her work, which included footage of a potential miracle. Images of an area in the hospice too dark to show up on film appeared in a soft light after development. This public exposure led to growth of her order throughout India and later in the world. Soon after Cardinal Spellman from the United States visited her at the Motherhouse. Mother Teresa recalled, ââ¬Å"He asked me where we lived. I told him, ââ¬ËHere in this room, your Eminence. This is our refectory. We move the tables and benches to the side.ââ¬â¢ He wanted to know where the rest of our convent was, where we could study. ââ¬ËWe study here, too, your Eminence,ââ¬â¢ I said. We have been created for that.â⬠Her Achievements In 1965, by granting a Decree of Praise, Pope Paul VI granted Mother Teresaââ¬â¢s request to expand her order to other countries. Teresaââ¬â¢s order started to rapidly grow, with new homes opening all over the globe. The orderââ¬â¢s first house outside India was in Venezuela, and others followed in Rome and Tanzania, and eventually in many countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe, including Albania. In addition, the first Missionaries of Charity home in the United States was established in the South Bronx, New York. By 1996, she was operating 517 missions in more than 100 countries. Today over one million workers worldwide volunteer for the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa traveled to help the hungry in Ethiopia, radiation victims at Chernobyl, and earthquake victims in Armenia. By the early 1970s, Mother Teresa had become known internationally. Her fame can be in large part attributed to the 1969 documentary Something Beautiful for God by Malcolm Muggeridge . In 1971 Paul VI awarded her the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize. Other awards bestowed upon her included a Kennedy Prize (1971), the Balzan prize (1978) for humanity, peace and brotherhood among peoples, the Albert Schweitzer International Prize (1975), the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom (1985) and the Congressional Gold Medal (1994), honorary citizenship of the United States (November 16, 1996), and honorary degrees from a number of universities. In 1972 Mother Teresa was awarded the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, ââ¬Å"for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.â⬠She refused the conventional ceremonial banquet given to laureates, and asked that the $6,000 funds be diverted to the poor in Calcutta, claiming the money would permit her to feed hundreds of needy for a year. In the same year, she was also awarded the Balzan Prize for promoting peace and brotherhood among the nations. At the time of her death, Mother Teresaââ¬â¢s Missionaries of Charity had over 4,000 sisters, an associated brotherhood of 300 members, and over 100,000 lay volunteers, operating 610 missions in 123 countries. These included hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, childrenââ¬â¢s and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools. Mother Teresa was granted a full state funeral by the Indian Government, an honor normally given to presidents and prime ministers, in gratitude for her services to the poor of all religions in India. Her death was widely considered a great tragedy within both secular and religious communities. The former U.N. Secretary-General Javier Pà ©rez de Cuà ©llar, for example, said: ââ¬Å"She is the United Nations. Crash of Races and Ethnicities Essay A 2004 crime and drama movie, Crash, written and directed by Paul Haggis is a multi-award-winning movie that captures a society that operates under racial stereotypes. This movie interlocks people of difference social classes, different backgrounds, difference races, and different beliefs. It shows how stereotypes lead to prejudgment and resentment toward a certain group of people. It shows how quick people are to judge others base on physical appearances. It also shows how every race becomes guilty and a victim of racial stereotypes. I really enjoy this movie for the many things I can take out and relate to the movie, yet still question whether or not this movie is truly a portrait of racism in America. When I first look at the title of the movie Crash, I think of automobile races or accidents. However, after streaming this 112 minutes movie, my thoughts have completely altered. Crash? is referred to how people of different social economic classes and how people of different races interact with each other. Most of the time, this interaction is easily influenced by the prejudice of people based on skin color. This is to say that people treat others differently for the skin color they have. We can see this when two black men walk out of the restaurant and one complains about the service saying that they were treated poorly because they were black. Also when an Iranian man tries to buy a gun from an ammunition store, the storeowner refuses to sell the gun to him even though he claims the right to own guns from having an American citizenship. The Iranian man is thought to be an Arab because of his Middle-east look and strong accent and probably associates with terrorism. Clearly, prejudice leads people to treat other unfairly base on the color of ones skin. I remember when my family and I first moved into the States, a predominantly white neighborhood. I was young, did not have a clue of what is going on. I tried to make new friends with the neighbor kids, but got rejected. I was told and convinced that it was because of my language barrier that I could not make friends with all these white kids. By the time I got to Junior High, my language skills improved, but still I had a hard time making new friends, even with those whose parents and grandparents came from the same place as mine. They are the second or third generation of children of immigrants, so they can easily blend in within this white neighborhood. Unlike them, my skin is not pale white; it is distinctively yellow, which flags me wherever I go. My language barrier was just a mask, which underneath lays a silent discrimination of my skin color. These people do not know me, but they know my skin color and that is how I was treated. In the movie, it shows how people of any races can easily become guilty or fall into victim of racial stereotypes. We can see this when a Mexican locksmith is fixing the door lock at they mayors house. The wife, Sandra Bullock thinks that the Mexican guy is a gang member because of his appearance: shaved head and messy tattoos. She orders the door lock to be changed the next morning because she is afraid that the Mexican guy will sell the keys to his gang members. After fixing the door lock, the Mexican guy leaves the keys on the counter, proving Sandra Bullocks false stereotype about him. Moreover, the TV producer tells one of his black actors to act more black during the cast of a commercial. As one can see, racial stereotypes can hurt both, viewer of the stereotypes and those who these stereotypes are viewed. I remember when I was in junior high school, I encountered this stereotype in math class â⬠Asian people are smart and good at math. This stereotype may be true for some Asian individuals; however, for me a few others, it puts us a bad situation. We never got much attention from the math teacher, nor did we get support from our white friends. The teacher rarely came by our desks and asked if he have any questions about the lectures. Our white friends kept saying, You are Asian, you should know this kind of math. ? The expectation for us to do well on the exam was so high that sometime I felt it as having two heavy weights on both of my shoulders. Such false stereotype is unhealthy and people should not let it influences their way of seeing real people. In terms of whether or not this movie accurately depict racism in America, I think it is to a certain extend. We can see the conflict going on when a group of people crashes ? into one another: Black, White, Latinos, Asian, and Indian. Still, we can see all these racial stereotypes from the movie: black people cannot be trusted, black are uneducated, black are criminals, Mexican are gangbangers, Middle-east people like Iranian and Arab are terrorists, and Asian are smart. As far as my concern, this movie goes a little too extreme about authority figure and male and white privileges. In the move, a white cop victimizes others by using his power as a white authority figure. He take out his anger on a black couple, humiliates the woman with body search invasion while keeping her husband stand powerless. I do not think that this is applicable in real life. Although a cop may be racist, he cannot take his duty to a personal level like that. Also in America, personal privacy is a big deal. Performing such invasive body search like that will cause this cop his job and possibly a few days in the jail. One other concern is about the ending of the movie. It is understandable that it will make a good movie ending when villains become heroes, but such thing does not happen in one day. A robber will not turn down thousands of dollars in front of him. At the end of the move, a black carjacker turns down the offer from a black market dealer and frees all the illegal immigrants in the van that he stole. Maybe I have too much of negative view from seeing his character throughout the movie, but still I think it cannot happen. This movie is only a depiction of parts of racism in America. In conclusion, Crash is an eye-opening movie about racial stereotypes in America that people just do not want to talk about. It shows how one can easily be influenced by prejudices about certain people. It does not matter which race an individual possesses, at the end that individual can become either guilty or unwilling victim of racial stereotypes if not carefully consider. I can relate my experience and understand the silent discrimination of my skin color that uses my language barrier as a mask. The one thing I have learn and will take it with me all the time is that people shouldnt believe stereotype they are told because there are always good and bad people in any races and stereotype just cannot cover all people.

The Education of Henry Adams Essay Henry Adams wrote a short preface to his landmark autobiography The Education of Henry Adams, which provides crucial clues at to what the book aims at. The first question mark is concerning whether it is an autobiography at all, and according to the admission of the author it is not so in the conventional sense. He tells us that the theme is education, and specifically it searches for a new mode of education that is appropriate to the age of science and mechanization. If he is telling the story of his life, it is as if he is putting himself forward as a manikin in order to expose the misfit of a garment, which here denotes traditional education. Adams wants to demonstrate to us that conventional education has not prepared him for the modern world, and this is the first aim we identify in the preface. The second, and related, aim is to show that such education did not ââ¬Å"educateâ⬠his fathers either, despite their smug assurances that it did. The third aim is to demonstrate that all education is self-education. A student cannot ask of his teacher to provide him with an ââ¬Å"educationâ⬠, but only a mastery of the tools of education. A young man with a keen mind is described as a bundle of energy, but which is liable to go to waste without economical application. The teacher shows him how to use the tools, and thereby how to economize his force. Once the tools have served their purpose they must be discarded, and to demonstrate why this is so is the fourthly stated aim. If the student does not discard the baggage of his education he is liable to be burdened with ââ¬Å"inert factsâ⬠, which becomes deadweight to him (Adams 379). The fifth and final aim concerns the vitality of the manikin. To introduce the analogy of the manikin in the first place may suggest that the subject of the autobiography is not really a person at all. Whether he is or not, the manikin must be treated as a real person, for if this is not done the garment of education cannot be tested on the manikin at all. What Adams is really saying is that, although we should distrust the ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠of the autobiography, because it is a pretentious and largely fictional being, we should empathize to an extent, because autobiography is bound to contain a measure of truth Because he distrusted the autobiographical ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠, Adams finds an alternative use of the subject of his autobiography, which is as a manikin doll to test suitably of conventional education, and whether it has prepared him for the world. He states that this act of self effacement is a trend started by Jean Jacques Rousseau, whose semi-autobiographical Emile is really an educational tract. Adams is suggesting that autobiography is automatically a narrative of oneââ¬â¢s education, and the narrator is simply the means by which this is accomplished. If this is the case, he prefers to do the deed expressly, calling the described character of Henry Adams a manikin doll, and education being the real subject matter. This does not mean that he becomes detached from the character, but he does avoid the ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠throughout, and narrates the story of Henry Adams strictly in the third person. The central concern of Adams is that conventional education is completely out of touch with the real world. There is no doubt that he gets the best available education for his age, attending the prestigious Harvard College. But his complaint is a fundamental one. Regarding his Harvard education he says: It taught little, and that little ill, but it left the mind open, free from bias, ignorant of facts, but docile. The graduate had few strong prejudices. He knew little, but his mind remained supple, ready to receive knowledge. (Ibid 55) In spite of being fiercely critical of Harvard at all time, what he describes of it, as evidenced in the above passage, is exactly what he states elsewhere that education should be. It is to have mastery of the tools and a remnant of an open mind, so that self education can proceed from thence onwards. Therefore, the point of his attack is not entirely clear. We can understand the criticism, though, from the point of view of the education being anarchic and nihilistic, but this was an indictment against the American educational system as a whole, and not just Harvard. For this he puts science on the dock, saying that if it does not promote a unity in vision. The modern search for scientific truth he relates to the worship of the dynamo, and he contrasts this to the worship of the Virgin, the iconic goddess of traditional Christianity. The worship of the Virgin promoted unity, and for which reason the Catholic Church was able to hold European civilization together in the Middle Ages. Science challenged this vision and overcame it in the end. Science also promised unity. When Francis Bacon propounds the experimental method of observation and induction in the 17th century, his hope was that scientific knowledge may arrive at unity, and one superior to the religious vision of unity because it eliminates mystery, and brings all knowledge into the clear light of day. But the promise of science has been proved to be erroneous, and after 300 years of unfettered science, multiplicity has come to be established as the regular mode of scientific knowledge. Adams maintains that such a situation cannot be dismissed lightly, and the American establishment certainly seems to do so. This is a failure of education, says Adams. Bacon had a clearly set goal of unity before him. But the typical American, confronted with multiplicity, failed to even recognize that there was a problem and ââ¬Å"an elderly American in 1900 knew neither the formula nor the forcesâ⬠(Ibid 379). The education system is to blame, he says, because it has turned learning into a merely mechanical process, and the learner is not even aware of the underlying purpose anymore. This purpose must be unity, for chaos is never a goal. The modern educated happily tread the path of anarchy and nihilism in learning, not even aware of the paradox that they create for themselves. The implication of Adams is that modern education must teach how to deal with multiplicity. But Adams fails to recognize that the seemingly indifferent American may indeed be well-adapted. He even admits this much when he describes the typical educated American as a ââ¬Å"Christian anarchistâ⬠, and says that this faith is ââ¬Å"national, racial, geographicâ⬠(Ibid 408). Such a Christian is different from the traditional one in that his belief in Christ does not lead to a unified communal vision, but rather to a personal one, and therefore one tending towards anarchy. Regarding such an American he says: He never had known a complete union either in Church or State or thought, and had never seen any need for it. The freedom gave him courage to meet any contradiction, and intelligence enough to ignore it. (Ibid) This describes someone well adapted to multiplicity. This faith may be fundamentally American, but it cannot be maintained without the complicity of the educational system. The American adopts diversity and multiplicity as a God-given right, but the faith itself unifies the American nation. If the nation is unified, then the goal is none other than unity. In this sense the American educational system offers the best preparation to deal with multiplicity. If Adams feels helpless before multiplicity, it is only because he has not sufficiently imbibed the American faith. And if this is so then we can only say that the American educational system has failed in his instance. Contemplating the theme of unity, Adams judges that history has a direction. If this were not so, and multiplicity was an end in itself, the chaos is the only result. This is a prelude to his ââ¬Å"dynamic theory of historyâ⬠which he develops later on in the Education. According to this theory, all life is motion, and this motion can either be chaotic or purposeful. Science describes only the chance collision of atoms and molecules, which is but one more way to describe chaos. The historian tries to be scientific in his approach, but fails to notice that the philosophy of science is not conducive to his practice. ââ¬Å"Historians undertake to arrange sequences, called stories, or histories assuming in silence a relation of cause and effect,â⬠he says (Ibid 382). Without realizing it the historian is telling a story that has a moral lesson attached to the end of it, and he does so because he realizes subconsciously that history is dynamic and has a direction. It is Adams purpose is to reform the practice of history, so that the historian becomes conscious of the unity that he is striving for, and does not just blindly tag along with science. But Adams fails to realize that this is exactly how the philosophy of history has progressed along with the advance of science, and found culmination of a sort with the German philosophers and historians, especially through Kant, Hegel and Marx. At one stage he dismisses German philosophy as primitive and faddish, without realizing that his own goals coincide with theirs, and that in relation to them he is far lagging behind. Because dynamism is the lifeblood of history, inertia is the one and only barrier to it. Adams sees America at the forefront of the thrust of history, but he also notices huge swathes of inertia around the world, and he draws attention to the enormous body of China as clinging on to the past. Surveying the political situation, he soon gives up hope that China will ever overcome its political inertia, and shifts his hope towards Russia, which is undulating between the East and West. Russia is also a body enormous inertia, but Adams pins hope on it eventually overcoming this barrier and joining the march of progress. But if history is all encompassing as Adams makes it out to be, then it cannot exclude inertia either. History has a place for both liberalism and reaction. Hegelââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"grand synthesisâ⬠is able to deal with this, whereas Adamsââ¬â¢ one dimensional theory of dynamism cannot. A bigger threat than political inertia is sexual inertia. Reproduction and homemaking lies at the root of human existence, and is the perpetual domain of the female. But the new dynamism ushered in by science wants to mechanize all tasks, and to collectivize all people. And to do this he leaves the home and denies sexual identity. Walt had a great desire to join the army, but was rejected because he was to young. Since he still desired to have some role in the war he became a volunteer with the Red Cross. Within a week he was sent to the front and didnââ¬â¢t return for one to two years. When Walt returned from he war he told his father that he wanted to become an animator, but his father did not approve. Walt ignored his fatherââ¬â¢s advice and enrolled in art school. Walt attended art school for several months in both Missouri and Kansas City and then later found a job at an advertising firm in Kansas. There he met a talented artist named Ubbe Iwerks. Ubbe was a great animator and he and Walt became good friends. Walt and Ubbe worked all day for the advertising company, but at night they studied the art of animation and experimented with ways to make animation smoother by using light and a camera. Walt soon quit his job at the advertising firm because he was not satisfied with the work he was doing. He found a job in Kansas City at a Film Ad Company. Walt was quickly fired from this job and having nowhere else to go, he returned home. 1920ââ¬â¢s USA Sources Coursework Essay
(1.) In source A, we see a cartoon of ââ¬ËUncle Samââ¬â¢, the symbol of America, looking at a picture of life in the USA from years before. I think that the cartoonist is trying to show how American life in the 1920s (when the cartoon was drawn) is so much different to American life in earlier years which is shown in the picture on the wall. We can see that many characters that represent different aspects of 1920ââ¬â¢s life in the USA surround ââ¬ËUncle Samââ¬â¢. For example, there are three women with the words ââ¬ËScandalââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËMaterialismââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËDivorceââ¬â¢ written on their dresses, and the words ââ¬ËEasy moneyââ¬â¢ in the smoke of Samââ¬â¢s cigar. The word scandal refers to the presidency of Warren G. Harding, when many instances of corruption occurred. For example, Hardingââ¬â¢s close friend, Charles Forbes, was thought to be responsible for the suspicious disappearance of $200 million from the Veteranââ¬â¢s Bureau account, of which he was the director. During Hardingââ¬â¢s term in office, this case of blatant fraud (and others) was unknown to the general public. However, by the time Source A was drawn in 1925, Calvin Coolidge had become president and these scandals were uncovered to the public. The word materialism refers to peopleââ¬â¢s changing attitude towards their own wealth, mainly due to the economic boom. After the First World War, the USA had gained status as the richest nation in the world. This was because it had not suffered physically or financially from the war, unlike its European counterparts. In fact, America was receiving vast amounts of money through re-payments from countries they had given loans to during the conflict. Also, Americaââ¬â¢s politics helped to shape the way that people earned and spent their money. With the Republicans in power, the nation learnt to exercise the policy of ââ¬Ëlaissez-faireââ¬â¢, which literally translated means ââ¬Ëlet it beââ¬â¢. In other words, people were able to build up their own businesses freely, safe in the knowledge that the government would not interfere too much or put up high taxes. In actual fact, taxes were decreased to encourage Americans to spend their wages on luxury goods, such as refrigerators or cars. High tariffs on exported goods from overseas meant people were more likely to buy products made in America, thus boosting the countryââ¬â¢s industries. People began to care more and more about their own wealth, and found that they had more money at their fingertips. This ties in with the words easy money, which refers to the Stock market. With more money in their pockets, Americans were always on the look out for ways in which they could invest it and even increase it. The Stock Exchange and property market provided the perfect outlet for this. Not only did professional stockbrokers play the market, but also the normal working public, who found they could make ââ¬Ëeasy moneyââ¬â¢, as it says in the cartoon, by simply buying stocks. However, the people who did this were not loyal to the company they bought them from, as they usually sold them as soon as the prise had risen. Another big change that occurred in this time was the role of women in society. The fact that the women in the cartoon are flappers, shows how by 1925, women were beginning to become independent and outspoken. They smoked, swore in public, and even rode motorcycles. The woman with the word divorce on her dress emphasises this point as well. In the 1920s, the divorce rate rose as women began to live their own lives without depending on men for support. So, what was the cartoonistââ¬â¢s message? Personally I think that he/she was trying to show how much the USA had changed from the times when ââ¬Å"pioneers lived simple lives in log cabinsâ⬠. The fact that ââ¬ËUncle Samââ¬â¢ is gazing at the picture and saying, ââ¬Å"Ah, those were the daysâ⬠is showing that, in effect, America yearns for the way that life used to be before everything became so materialistic and money-orientated, even though he himself is sitting in the ââ¬Ëseat of luxuryââ¬â¢. (2.) In source B, we see a photograph of two Negroes hanged from a tree whilst being surrounded and watched by a crowd of white people. Source C is an extract from a newspaper, which describes in detail the lynching of another Negro in a separate incident. These two sources are similar in some ways and different in others. There are a number of ways that we can see this. Firstly, both sources show a similar reaction from the crowd to the actual lynching. B shows the crowd looking up at the bodies enthusiastically, and even one man pointing to them as if to show to the camera something he is proud of. There does not appear to be anyone looking distressed or upset by the incident, with most ââ¬Ëspectatorsââ¬â¢ looking joyous and pleased. Both sources show the crowd to be diverse (obviously within the same ethnic group), with people of all ages and both sexes. Source C also describes the crowdââ¬â¢s reaction as being happy at the Negroââ¬â¢s fate. In fact, the crowd seemed to be even more enthusiastic in the second source than in the first one, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦. joined hands and danced around while the Negro was burnedâ⬠. But ultimately, both sources show the different crowds to be in approval of the lynchings. However, one difference between the two sources is who actually committed the lynching in each case. In B, we can only see what appears to be normal, white cillivians in the crowd. There does not seem to be any members of the Ku Klux Klan in their usual white ââ¬Ëuniformââ¬â¢. Therefore, independent bigots could have simply done the hanging in the first source, in an almost spontaneous fashion. In comparison, Source C seems to have been a more planned event, organised by the Ku Klux Klan. The fact that the extract says that there was more than 500 people present and that people were travelling from other cities by car just to see the lynching gives us the impression that it was highly publicised within the ââ¬Ëracist communityââ¬â¢. We can not tell the exact number of people at the hanging in source B, but we can assume that it was probably not as many as in the second source. Another difference between the two sources is that, obviously, one is a photograph and one is a newspaper extract. If I were to choose, I would probably say that a photograph (source B) gives a more accurate impression of an event than an account (source C) of somebody who was simply present at the time. This is because a photograph is taken at the time and can not be changed. Whether or not the photographer was racist does not make any difference because, generally, the camera does not lie and is not biased, depending on the context. But the newspaper extract was written after the event and is therefore less accurate, because the writer could have forgotten important details or even written the account in an unfair or biased way. (3.) Source F is a photograph showing a crowd of people demonstrating on the behalf of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, taken in April 1927. How useful would it be for a historian who was studying the case of the two imprisoned immigrants? We can see in the photograph that there is quite a large crowd of people, which gives the impression that the majority of Americans supported Sacco and Vanzetti. However, that is not strictly true. Although the two accused men did have many supporters who protested against their impending execution, most normal American people agreed with it. This was mainly due to the American publicââ¬â¢s fear of Communists or ââ¬ËRedsââ¬â¢ as they were commonly called. Since the Russian Revolution in 1917, people had started to believe that communism was spreading and would eventually reach the USA. This caused the number of immigrants brought to America to be limited, and any that did come were discriminated against. This seems to be case with Sacco and Vanzetti. In hindsight, it appears that the two men were used as â⬠scape-goatsââ¬â¢ for a crime they possibly did not commit. Being Italian immigrants made them an easy target, and it was unlikely that the American public would believe their word against the American legal system and police. However, is this shown in the photograph? Without background knowledge of the subject, it would be hard to tell by the photograph whether most people were supportive of Sacco and Vanzetti or not. The photograph is quite misleading, as it seems as though the majority of the American public was on their side, which was not the case. Although I can not tell for sure, I believe that the people in the photograph are other immigrants, who were generally the only people that supported the two men. This was because most immigrants felt that the discrimination against Sacco and Vanzetti could easily happen to them one day in the future. But this is not necessarily clear from the photograph. However, it could be useful to a historian as an example of the minority that did support them. (4.) I do not believe that the cartoon in Source E is very useful at all. This is for a number of different reasons. Firstly, Nazis produced the cartoon. This means that it is biased against the USA, and would therefore not provide a fair or accurate view of American life. Even if some aspects of the cartoon were true, they would undoubtedly be used in a misleading way. This is why propaganda can never be used as an accurate impression of something. Secondly, as the cartoon was made during the Second World War, it is intended to show what American life was like during this time (1939-1945). So therefore it does not show what life was like in the 1920s. Also, many of the examples of American life used are loosely true but are used inaccurately. For example, the ââ¬Ëbodyââ¬â¢ (which is supposedly meant to represent the USA) is shown as having the head of a Ku Klux Klan member. This could be interpreted that the Klan were very dominant throughout the whole of the USA as they are seen as being at the head of it all. This was not true. A registration of cars increased. This means that more cars were made because there was a bigger demand for them, and more cars were bought because people had more money to spend. Also the sale of radios greatly increased in this decade. These statistics certainly help to support Hooverââ¬â¢s claim that America was winning the battle over poverty. Source J also emphasises the point that during this era, the country began to spend more money on luxury goods, such as big houses and cars. However, the same two sources also show us that the opposite was also true. Not everyone in the USA was making a lot of money, as shown in source I. When compared to the $1246 that Californian fruit farmers made per month in 1929, the South Carolinaââ¬â¢s farmers pay packet of only $129 per month seems very measly. This is one example of how not everybody did well in the 1920s. This was mainly due to overproduction of goods; in other words, more food was produced than could be sold. Also, due to the high tariffs put on American exports, the food could not be sold in Europe. Source J also points out that the America people had become so obsessed with making money that it would eventually be the death of them; ââ¬Å"I think the country was in greater danger during the twentiesâ⬠¦more money every year for everyoneâ⬠¦Suddenly everybody owned a motor carâ⬠¦All we needed was to make more automobiles and build bigger houses.â⬠We must also remember that Hoover made the speech in source H during the Presidential Election campaign. This means that he was obviously going to say something that would encourage the general public to have faith in the Republican government and to help get him in to the White House. Therefore it might be an exaggerated or ââ¬Ësugar-coatedââ¬â¢ form of the truth, which most politicians seem to have a talent at expressing. (6.) Source K is a song written in 1971 for an American television show. It is about how much better life in the 1920s was than the present day (i.e. when the song was written). Source L is an extract from a history textbook about how the majority of Americans in the 1920s did not live the ââ¬Ëhigh lifeââ¬â¢ and were, in fact, very poor and facing unemployment. At a first glance we can see that source K is not completely accurate about life in the twenties. In the first line it mentions ââ¬ËGlenn Millerââ¬â¢, a bandleader who is described as playing, ââ¬ËSongs that made the hit paradeââ¬â¢. This is actually incorrect, as Glen Miller was a bandleader in the 1930s and 1940s, not the 1920s. It also mentions Herbert Hoover, which seems quite strange as he was only President for one year of the twenties, 1929. It is examples like these that seem to jeopardise the accuracy of the source. Also, the fact that it was written in 1971 makes me believe that it is less reliable than something that was written closer to the time. Also, I get the impression that the song is slightly sarcastic and comedic, as opposed to being a reliable account of 1920s American life. It is because of this that it could be easily misinterpreted. For example, the line that says, ââ¬Å"Freaks were in a circus tentâ⬠could be referring to the time when people were highly suspicious of immigrants and hence Attorney-General Palmer ordered for many suspected socialists to be deported. But this is not very clear. Also the line that says that everybody was content is not very true. Many people were very poor in the twenties, and times were very hard for some people, such as farmers. Also, Negroes were still being treated as third-rate citizens and were often discriminated against. Also, the song is an opinion, so does not represent everybodyââ¬â¢s views. Source L however seems much more accurate. Because it was written for a history textbook it is more likely to show a reliable viewpoint on 1920s life. Especially since it contains an example of an actual fact, as opposed to an opinion (i.e. that job insecurity was on the increase for the over 35s). It is much more realistic than source K, for example using words such as ââ¬Ëvast numbers of Americansââ¬â¢ instead of words like ââ¬Ëeverybodyââ¬â¢ as seen in the first source. So, in my opinion, Source L shows a more reliable impression of 1920s life than source K. (7.) From looking at all the sources, it is very hard to draw a straight conclusion as to whether the 1920s was a ââ¬Ëgolden ageââ¬â¢ for Americans or not. To decide, I will look at all the sources again. Firstly, it is evident that economically, America did extremely well in this decade. In source I we see that within three years (1926-1929) the number of cars produced each year had increased by over 1 million. We also see that within eight years (1920-1929) the number of cars registered had been increased by nearly three times and that within seven years (1922-1929) the amount of money spent on radios increased by $764.5 million. So what does this tell us? This basically shows us that the 1920s were the beginning of the age of consumer power. People began to have more money to spend on luxury goods, so in turn more were produced. This lead to the growth of industries in the nation. However, the ever-growing capitalism in the USA did not reach everyone. Source L shows us how there was still many people without jobs. Source I supports this fact by showing how there was a wide range of wages all over the country, ranging from just $129 per month to $1246 per month. Also, there was a great deal of intolerance in America. Sources B and C show in great detail how Negroes, in particular, suffered from intolerance.

We planned our strategy taking into consideration all the aspects of marketing, H. R, finance and operations. Marketing plays a very crucial role in this modern world so we promoted our products through various forms of media. We spent heavily at the start just because we wanted to make our presence felt in the market. We always believed that our team is of utmost importance to us, so we made sure that there is a balance between automation and workforce to maximize production. We also paid them well so that they remain motivated at all times and work towards the goal of the company. Training of employees is a must and this is necessary for the quality of the cars. We noticed that our Warranty claims were high, so by proper training this could have only been reduced. Research and Development is an important area and a good amount of money was spent over the years so that we develop better and environment friendly cars in the times to come. We made sure that the money is not spent on general RD rather we identified some key areas and invested in those constantly. Finance was an area of concern as we were incurring huge losses; we took necessary steps to improve this. We priced our products aggressively and planned production efficiently. As a result this gave us better sales. We also tried to cut down on costs, which gave us a better gross margin over the years. We started to make profits in the later years and this shows that our products have been well accepted by the market. We offered Alpha (medium) and Beta (large) cars in the beginning then we came up with Delta (city ââ¬â hybrid) and lastly with Zeta (diesel ââ¬â luxury). The luxury market was untapped and we thought we could do well by selling a small number of cars because the margins in a luxury car are huge. The offering was based on the market research and the demand in the market. The design of the cars kept on changing as requested by the customers. This showed that we were catering to all segments of the market in terms of offering and pricing. Our aim is to be a leading car manufacturer by creating stylish, reliable, eco friendly cars by following the principles of enhancing our team, extending our business and enlarging our market. To sustain in this competitive market we have to take into account what the competitor is doing and react accordingly by delivering a better product. The need of the hour is to connect with the customers. The world is moving towards alternative fuels and we will also try to come up with products that are environmental friendly keeping in mind the needs of the customer yet giving stylish, value for money and fuel efficient cars.
